Google Reshapes European Hotel Search Interface to Dodge €1.5B+ EU Antitrust Exposure

The redesign strips Google's own vertical from primacy—a template for what U.S. regulators may soon demand.

Google deployed a new hotel-search interface across the European Union on September 10, replacing the five-year-old design that placed Google Hotels prominently atop search results. The company made no public announcement. The change surfaces competing metasearch engines—Booking.com, Kayak, Trivago—in a neutral carousel format, removing the previous visual hierarchy that favored Google's own property. EU antitrust officials had warned the company in closed-door meetings this summer that failure to restructure the interface would trigger fines scaling from €1.5 billion to €2.3 billion, based on a percentage of European search-advertising revenue.

The prior design, launched in 2021, showed Google Hotels results in a dedicated module above organic listings, with third-party metasearch links relegated to smaller tiles below. The new interface treats all providers as equals in a horizontal scroll. Google's own hotel module now appears after the carousel, not before. Pricing data remains aggregated from the same suppliers, but the visual weight has shifted. The company applied identical logic to flight search in the same update, though airline distribution remains less concentrated than hotel inventory, limiting the regulatory risk.

This matters because Google controls 92 percent of European search traffic, and hotel searches represent one of the highest-intent, highest-margin queries in the travel vertical. Metasearch platforms generate between 18 percent and 34 percent of direct bookings for major hotel chains, according to 2025 Phocuswright data. When Google's own vertical sits atop results, click-through rates to competing platforms drop by 40 percent to 60 percent, depending on the query. The EU's concern is not that Google offers hotel search—it is that Google uses its monopoly in general search to extend dominance into verticals where competitors already exist. The redesign is a rare case of a U.S. platform preemptively restructuring a product to avoid European enforcement, rather than negotiating after penalties land.

The template now exists for U.S. regulators. The Department of Justice filed an amended antitrust complaint against Google in July, adding search verticals—travel, local, shopping—to the original case focused on search-distribution agreements. If the DOJ prevails in remedies arguments in early 2027, it will likely point to the European interface as proof that Google can operate profitably without self-preferencing. Hotel chains and metasearch platforms are already preparing filings to argue for a similar U.S. redesign. Booking Holdings, which owns Booking.com and Kayak, declined to comment on the European change but noted in its August earnings call that "regulatory clarity in search distribution" would be a priority for the next eighteen months.

Operators should monitor three developments. First, whether Google applies the same interface to the U.K. and Switzerland by year-end, signaling broader non-EU compliance. Second, whether the DOJ references the European redesign in its remedies proposal, expected in February 2027. Third, whether click-through rates to metasearch platforms in Europe increase by more than 15 percent in Q4 2026, which would confirm that visual hierarchy, not just presence, drives user behavior.

The compliance here is structural, not symbolic. Google rebuilt the interface because the alternative was a fine large enough to matter, attached to a behavioral remedy it could not control. The design is now live in twenty-seven markets, affecting 340 million monthly travel-search users, and the DOJ has a working example of what neutral search could look like in the largest advertising market in the world.

The takeaway
Google's EU hotel-search redesign is a working template for U.S. antitrust remedies—watch for DOJ reference in February 2027 filings.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
