Walmart completed its acquisition of Vibe.co, the physical-screen advertising company, folding the platform into Walmart Connect without releasing transaction terms. The deal, announced in June and closed in early January, gives Walmart direct control over 10,000+ CTV-enabled screens in grocery stores, gas stations, and pharmacies across North America. Walmart Connect generated an estimated $3.2B in advertising revenue in fiscal 2024, making this the retailer's first vertical integration into advertising infrastructure hardware.

Vibe.co operated a programmatic platform for screens in point-of-sale environments—retail waiting areas, convenience stores, medical offices. Walmart now owns the software stack, the screen relationships, and the closed-loop sales attribution that ties a Campbell's Soup ad on a pharmacy screen to a basket scan fourteen minutes later. The company did not disclose redundancies or staff changes, but Vibe.co's 40-person engineering team is expected to remain in Austin and report into Walmart Connect's Hoboken headquarters.

The acquisition matters because it removes the last dependency in Walmart's advertising flywheel. Amazon has owned its ad server since 2019. Target runs its Roundel division on Criteo's white-labeled infrastructure. Walmart, until now, relied on Trade Desk and Google DV360 for programmatic CTV delivery. Vibe.co's platform allows Walmart to bypass those tolls entirely, keeping 100% of the spread between what Unilever pays for a Dove placement and what the gas station owner receives for screen time. For CPG brands already spending $400M+ annually with Walmart Connect, this means tighter attribution windows and fewer data handoffs between impression and purchase.

The second-order effect sits in physical retail. Walmart operates 4,600 U.S. stores with an average 37 million weekly visitors. Vibe.co's screens were historically placed in *other retailers'* locations. Walmart can now install its own hardware in its own pharmacies, vision centers, and fuel stations, creating a captive audience for brands that cannot afford Super Bowl slots but need reach at scale. A 15-second pre-roll for Tylenol in a Walmart pharmacy waiting room, attributed to a Tylenol purchase eight minutes later, becomes the highest-intent media buy in consumer packaged goods.

Operators should watch three developments over the next six months. First, whether Walmart begins hardware rollouts in its own stores or continues leasing Vibe.co's external screen inventory. Second, whether Trade Desk and Google renegotiate their Walmart Connect partnerships or see spend migrate to the owned platform. Third, whether competing grocery chains—Kroger, Albertsons, Ahold Delhaize—accelerate their own physical-media acquisitions to avoid yielding the point-of-sale advertising layer to Walmart. Kroger's $24.6B Albertsons merger, still under FTC review, would create a retailer with 5,000 stores and comparable scale to justify similar infrastructure investments.

Vibe.co's Austin engineering team begins reporting to Walmart's Hoboken office this month, with the first integrated CTV campaigns expected in Q2 2025.

The takeaway
Walmart now owns the full CTV stack—hardware, software, attribution—removing third-party tolls and creating captive point-of-sale inventory at **37M** weekly visits.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
